Former AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has been appointed the new manager of Chelsea, the Premier League club announced on Monday. Ancelotti had stood down after watching his AC Milan side defeat Fiorentina 2-0 – in what was Paulo Maldini’s last game for the club.
It was an afternoon of goodbyes in Florence on Sunday, with both Maldini and Ancelotti bowing out after Milan secured Champions League football for next season. Ancelotti won four European Cups with the Milanese club – two as a player and two as a manager – will be welcomed at Stamford Bridge after another season of disappointment. Guus Hiddink brought a level of stability to the South London club – however, have had to watch Manchester United pick up three Premier League trophies since 2007.
Ancelotti has apparently requested that the deal involves bringing an AC Milan player to Chelsea – believed to be either Andrea Pirlo or the Brazilian Kaka – whilst there have been a number of rumours linking Bayern Munich and French International playmaker to the FA Cup winners. Ancelotti has targeted the Champions League as his main priority. The Italian will take over in a month’s time.
