Manchester United claimed their eighteenth English Championship, equaling the record set by arch rivals Liverpool back in 1989/90. Manchester United have won the Premier League on the past three occasions and the point they obtained against Arsenal was enough to get them over the finishing line. Meanwhile at the other end, WBA were relegated after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.
Manchester United clinched the title after a scoreless draw against Arsenal – which was nowhere near the dominance United showed against the North London club two weeks ago. United’s closest rivals Liverpool beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 with goals from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt. Two from Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Hull City and Sunderland will join the midlanders in the Championship next season.
Manchester United first won the title back in 1908 and added another in 1911 before the Busby years – where the legendary manager added a further five to United’s haul. After Busby stepped down the club had to wait twenty six years before winning the title again in 1993. United then went onto win the title another ten times under Sir Alex Ferguson – the most championships ever won by a manager in England. United now have the chance to retain the European Cup against Barcelona in Rome on the 27th May 2009.
