Internazionale humbled by Napoli

Former Juventus forward Marcelo Zalayeta scored the winner in a shock 1-0 victory for Napoli over Serie A leaders Inter Milan. However, his former club couldn’t take advantage of their ex-employee’s strike – by drawing away at improving Reggina. Inter Milan’s city rivals AC Milan beat Palermo 3-0 to close the gap to seven points – with five games left to play.

Internazionale’s defeat was only the third in their league campaign this season while it was Napoli’s first Serie A win since the start of the year and their first since former Milan midfielder Roberto Donadoni succeeded Edy Reja as coach in March. Inter, who are bidding for their fourth successive title, were succumb to a noisy San Paolo crowd, which gave Napoli confidence and Ezequiel Lavezzi fed Zalayeta and the Uruguayan forward fired home on 73 minutes.

AC Milan thrashed southerns Palermo with a brace from Kaka and a single strike from Inzaghi. Milan, who adopted their usual 4-3-2-1 formation, knew that in order to have any chance of catching Inter they had to beat Palermo. Kaka opened the scoring with a penalty before a header from Inzaghi doubled the seven times European Cup winners lead. Kaka scored another penalty in the second half to give Milan a three goal lead.
