16 years on…Remembering Zambia’s fallen soccer heroes

Not sure how many here have heard of the Gabon Air disaster in 1993 in which the entire Zambian national soccer team perished in an instant, releasing a wave of emotional pain across Africa and Zambia in particular. Today, April 28 2009 marks exactly 16 years since that tragic event. To commemorate this day, I’m putting up this emotional piece written by Jay Mwamba, a Zambian journalist based in New York, who personally knew many of the players that perished on that fatefull day.

Internazionale humbled by Napoli

Former Juventus forward Marcelo Zalayeta scored the winner in a shock 1-0 victory for Napoli over Serie A leaders Inter Milan. However, his former club couldn’t take advantage of their ex-employee’s strike – by drawing away at improving Reggina. Inter Milan’s city rivals AC Milan beat Palermo 3-0 to close the gap to seven points – with five games left to play.

Raul hattrick puts pressure on Barca

Real Madrid’s legendary forward Raul scored a hat trick against Sevilla to put more pressure on Barcelona who were held to a 2-2 draw. Real Madrid and Barcelona meet next week at the Bernabeu in what is an immensely important match as Madrid have an enormous opportunity to pile even more pressure on their rivals from Catalonia.

Milan keen on Beckham Return

David Beckham signs for AC Milan

AC Milan are keen to have David Beckham back next season once the MLS season has finished. Beckham has been on loan since January on a time-share deal, and will go back to America when the Serie A season ends.

Messi nets winner in 1-0 win

Messi scores

Lionel Messi scored, what was to be the winning goal, in a 1-0 victory over Getafe and push Barcelona closer to the La Liga title with only seven games left to play. Chasing Real Madrid also won 1-0 away at Recreativo Huelva whilst Valencia move up to fourth following their 3-1 win over Sevilla.

Inzaghi nets hatrick as Milan go joint second

Inzaghi scores hattrick

AC Milan striker Fillipo Inzaghi netted a hat-trick against Torino to see his side move up to joint second after a 5-1 victory of Torino. Elsewhere, Juventus were held at home by Serie A Leaders Internazionale whilst lowly Reggina obtained a priceless win away at Atalanta.

Drogba guns down Arsenal in semi-final

Didier Drogba fired Chelsea into the final of the FA Cup after a howler from Lukasz Fabianski the Arsenal goalkeeper. Fabianski was celebrating his birthday, however it was he who giving out all the presents yesterday.

Ferguson hits back at Benitez

Sir Alex Ferguson has renewed his on going feud with Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez after he called the Spaniard arrogant in his assessment of Everton some years ago – whilst also backing up pal Sam Allardyce after he was left ‘humiliated’ by the actions of the Liverpool boss after Fernando Torres second goal last week against his Blackburn side.

Gerrard out of Chelsea tie

Steven Gerrard is out of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Chelsea having failed to recover from a groin injury. Gerrard was rested against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, in which Liverpool won 4-0, and was expected to feature in the squad for the Champions League quarter final with Chelsea.
