Ghana and Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has revealed that he feels much more pressure playing for his country than he does his club. Essien feature along side Stephen Appiah in the 2006 World Cup finals – eventually losing 3-0 to Brazil.
Essien was speaking ahead of his country’s World Cup Qualifier with Benin on Saturday and added “There is more pressure playing for Ghana than Chelsea. There is no doubt about that”. Essien, who has scored eight times for his country, has recently returned from a serious injury after missing most of the premier league campaign.
The Ghanaian also went onto add “It is difficult to describe the pride one feels when putting on the national jersey because Ghana has so many footballers and I am among the few who have been chosen. This makes me want to die when I play for Ghana because it is a cause worth fighting for. It is the only way I can pay my country back for giving me the opportunity to represent them.”
