Chelsea and Ivory Coast forward Didier Drogba has today spoke of his sadness after a stadium stampede resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people during a World Cup 2010 qualifier on Sunday.
The 31 year old, who has scored only twice in 18 Premier League appearances to date, scored the same amount in his sides 5-0 victory over Malawi. However, the incidents off the pitch ‘put football into perspective’ said the front man. At least another 130 people were injured when crowds tried to cram into the Houphouet-Boigny stadium to watch Ivory Coast entertain Malawi.
Drogba commented after the game “Football is nothing – you are talking about the death of 19 people. It is hard to take. When things like that happen it makes you realise how much people care about their country, their team. Peace to them. It is sad.”
